Chinese Art Centre.

At the Chinese Art Centre in Manchester the Public are invited to bring in Broken Objects or Obsolete Trivia which have been made in China. If the Craftsmen think they can make the objects look good, they will then work on them and apply Gold Leaf to them to make them decorative.

The Chinese Art Centre.

Each Object is cleaned and coated with a very thin coat of Clay and the left to dry.The sticks are there to help dry out each object both inside and out. "Very delicate work". Some things with wooden type handles have been painted with blackboard paint ready for the next part in the process.

The Chinese Art Centre.

The objects that have been covered in Clay are now dry and have been covered in a clear sticky glue and are waiting for the technicians to start Gilding with Gold Coloured Leaf to make them Saleable. As you can see some of the objects have all ready been done.

The Chinese Art Centre.

This is the Gilding Section of the Work Shop. The card board keeps the Gold Leaf of the Table making it easier to work with.

The Chinese Art Centre.

These are some of the Articles that have been Gilded. What are they worth?  The Chinese Bookkeeper works out the amount of time the object took to Gild. Then puts a price on them. Then the public can buy them back if they want. The Plastic 6inch Ruler (top right ) now gilded works out about £7. I asked what kind of Gold they were using, and was told (Dutch Gold). Researched Dutch Gold on the Net, and found that (Dutch Gold Leaf) has no Gold in it. It's made from Copper and Brass with a bit of Zinc thrown in. It is for sale in Craft Shops in Holland.

Hough End Hall

This is Hough End Hall now. It was built in 1592 and has now been turned in to a Restaurant. The business is up for sale, but I think Manchester Corporation still owns the property. One interesting thing, if you notice
some of the windows have been blocked out. This is due to the window tax in the 18th century which meant that the more windows you had, the more tax you paid. All over the country, windows were blocked up.  Hence the term "Day Light Robbery".

Monday 18 July 2011

The Clough

The remains of the Forest and heavy under- growth is good to hide things. In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie's Horses and Guns were hidden in this Forest so the Royalist Soldiers were unable to find them. The Jacobite Rebellion Troops passed through Manchester on their way down to Derby where they were Beaten

Sunday 17 July 2011

Carbooting.

For Six weeks in the Summer on the fields of Hough End Clough, the Manchester City Sanction a very large Car boot Sale. With up to about 400 Cars attending. Extremely Popular. As they say One Mans junk is another Mans Treasure?

Carbooting.

One of the Essential Stalls at any Car boot Sale is the Mobile Cafe' Selling everything from Beef Burgers and Chips to Fried Egg Butties. Most people get up early and skip breakfast to get all the Bargains. So they are hungry and thirsty after buying. So the "Scran Waggon" probably makes more money than any one else on the Car Boot. Ha Ha.

Carbooting.

Clothes feature big in Car Boot Sales. So they are very popular with the Ladies. As they go up and down in Sizes in their Lives. So they get rid of old Party Frocks and such. Men are different, we wear clothes till they drop off.  I have looked at my old holiday snaps, and guess what, the same Sport Shirts appeared in them all.
( Tight Sod I Hear You Say ) LOL.

Carbooting.

This man hasn't got a Car or a Paste Table just a Push Bike, but doesn't bother him. He lays out the Jewelry and odds and sods he has for sale on a white sheet in the bright sunshine.

Carbooting.

The weather is perfect for Searching the Car Boot. So the crowds turn out in Thousands. So it's Bargains Bargains Bargains. LOL.

Carbooting.

Shoes are another big sale item on Car Boots. Mostly Ladies and Children Shoes. Children's Shoes only last about 6 months as they grow up fast and can be expensive in the shops. So a good pairs of them are a popular buy.

Friday 1 July 2011

St Clements Church.

St Clements Church.

On each corner of the Tower there is a  Pinnacle, and metal stay to the middle, which helps to hold up a substantial 30ft  flag pole  When flag is flying it has to be "The Flag of St George". The Union Jack is not allowed to fly on Churches.( I wonder why ?)
