These Markets were built in 1879s. Lower one was opened 1880 and the Upper in 1882. They were covered and made of cast iron. They were built on common land where the old Knott Mill Fair used to be. On Easter week end there used to be boxing booths, fat women booths, dwarfs, dancing lions, learned pigs, and other curiosities. Drunkenness and petty crime including impropriety, was rife so was closed down 1876.
